The Protaper technique

The protaper system, the files used and the advantages are discussed in detail in this section.

1. What are shaping files in protaper file system? How are the identified?

Shaping files are for shaping the root canal. Shaping file no. 1 and no. 2 termed S1 and S2 respectively have purple and white identification rings on their handles respectively. The auxillary shaping file SX1 has no identification ring on its gold colored handle.

2. How are the finishing files identified in protaper system?

The three finishing files F1, F2 and F3 have yellow, red and blue identification rings respectively on their handles.

3. What are the two main causes that lead to breakage of rotary instruments?

The two mail causes that result in breakage of NiTi rotary instruments are the method of use and multiple use. The instrument should be periodically inspected for wear and its cutting blades cleaned frequently to reduce the potential for breakage. The best is to discard the NiTi instruments after each case to reduce the metal fatigue and loss of cutting efficiency.

4. What are the requirements of an access cavity?

The access prepared should be cut so that the pulpal roof including all the overlying dentin is removed. The size of the access is dictated by the position of the orifice. The axial walls are extended such that the orifice is within the outline form. The internal walls are flared and smoothed to provide easy straightline access into the orifice and the root canal system.
