Gold onlay-lower molar

This patient reported with a complaint of repeated fracture of amalgam restoration in the lower molar. Clinical examination revealed wide cavity in vital left mandibular first molar with a fractured cusp. Cast restoration with gold alloy was planned. The operative photographs show the cavity preparation after assessment of caries removal with caries detector dye. Glass ionomer base was applied on the distal axial wall.

This is the immediate post operative photograph in which the cast gold onlay is in position and has perfect margins and adaptation. These type of restorations are very successful for larger cavities with vital pulp , when compared to the direct restorations.
